How to get back on track after a DUI charge

A DUI charge can throw a wrench in your plans for the future. Pennsylvania courts can impose a number of penalties for driving under the influence, ranging from minor fines to jail time. Your sentencing will mainly depend on the severity of the situation and whether you have had a DUI charge before.

Despite the consequences you may have received, you can still put this ordeal behind you. It may take time and patience, but you will be able to return to normal life after everything is said and done.

Pay fines

According to state law, a mild first offense may come with a $300 fine. This amount is often manageable for the average resident, but fines could quickly increase up to $10,000 for serious or repeat offenses.

Fines that soar into the thousands of dollars might be difficult to pay out of pocket. If you simply can't afford to pay before the due date, you can ask your attorney how you should handle the fine. In some cases, the court could offer a payment plan or give you an alternative way to earn fee dismissal.

Complete treatment

Whether the court ordered rehabilitation or not, you can take action now to prevent future DUI charges. Joining a support group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, can motivate you to form healthy habits. If you use substances to cope, you may wish to begin therapy to address the underlying cause. Consider court-required treatment as an opportunity to make a positive change rather than a punishment.

Regain your license

It's likely that the police will suspend your driver's license for a period of time. Although waiting and finding other forms of transportation is far from convenient, you could face additional penalties for driving without a valid license during this time.

However, you may be eligible for an Occupational Limited License, which could also come with an ignition interlock device to ensure sober driving. This license can allow you to drive for necessary purposes, such as work or medical appointments. Regardless of the obstacles, you can recover from a DUI charge.
